GHS Senior Yearbook Photo - Nancy Kutsup

Student

From kindergarten through high school, Nancy Kutsup attended Garfield Public Schools.

Her elementary teachers at Thomas Jefferson #9 were very knowledgeable and well-prepared her for her continuing education.

At Garfield High School, Mrs. Kutsup experienced teachers that equipped her with the skills necessary for success at the college level. She was a member of the National Honor Society and believes she was a well-rounded student who also participated in athletics. Since there were no varsity sports until Title IX, Mrs. Kutsup participated in bowling, softball, and basketball through intramural sports. As a junior and senior, she was a varsity cheerleader. When Title IX was initiated during her senior year, she successfully tried out for the Varsity Boys Tennis Team.

Before Title IX, girls were not permitted in "shop" classes, which caused her to change her career trajectory.

One of the most memorable experiences in Mrs. Kutsup's life was traveling to Berlin with the German Club at 18 years old. She saw the Berlin Wall under full communist control, and visiting Checkpoint Charlie was a sobering experience that made her deeply appreciate her freedom.
